Things to See & Do

Not only is Altoona Iowa's Gateway to Fun with major theme parks, live racing and freshwater aquariums, but we have outstanding neighborhood parks with sand/mud volleyball and tennis courts, play areas and over 18 miles of bike trails. We enjoy live concerts in Haines Park on lazy Sunday afternoons, 5k races and community bike rides.

Fall brings cooler temperatures, high school football games and parades! The Southeast Polk Homecoming parade is quite possibly the biggest in Iowa and everyone: businesses, residents, students and organizations alike, join in the fun!

Just around the corner in October is the ever popular Taste of Altoona event hosted by the Altoona Area Chamber of Commerce. Over 70 businesses fill up the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center at the Iowa State Fairgrounds to share their products and services as well as a tasty treat with thousands of residents and visitors. You can sample just about anything at this business and food fair - from beef wellington, to chili, to BBQ to gourmet breads and cheeses to mini fried tacos, cookies, cupcakes and candy!

There is so much to see and do in Altoona - come for a visit, but you might just want to stay!
