7 Reasons You May Not Be Growing Followers on Social Media

By: Kennedy Wilson, Events and Marketing Coordinator AACC

Growing a following on social media can be really challenging and taxing, which can often lead to feeling really frustrated! Hopefully I can relieve some of that frustration by providing you with some reasons as to why your following might not be growing like you want it to!

1. You're inconsistent, therefore you never build momentum.

- When you stop start, you're literally going back to the beginning every single time. Be consistent on WHEN (time of day) you post, HOW often (how many times a week) you post, and WHAT you post.

2. You obsess over little things like hashtags instead of making better content.

-You're content isn't going to go viral over hashtags. You need to be focused on good content that your TARGET clients love.

3. You have poor quality content.

-Content doesn't have to be perfect, but it does need to incorporate the basics. Make sure your content is precise, gets to the point, and is easy to consume. A little goes a long way.

4. You do engagement or followers loops.

-Are you only producing content for people that already follow you? If so, that's the fast track train to not gaining new followers or clientele. Your social media platforms will not push your content unless it appeals to more people!

5. You obsess over your niche instead of your ideal client.

- All of your content should be created for your ideal clients. Too many people say, "I can't apply that to my business." Then they become stuck. You want to reach a younger demographic? Create younger demographic content-- short videos, reels etc. Make them care about what you're saying/selling.

6. You jump on trends that aren't relatable to your ideal client.

- If your ideal client is mid 30's to 50's, TikTok will not help you reach them. Most people in that age group are your Facebookers- maybe Instagram. If your demographic is 20's and younger-- that's your TikTok and Instagram group! Look at your insights on your platforms. What age group are most of your follows from? Produce content centered around that!

7. Your videos or reels are too long and you make yourself not relevant in the video

- We are in an instant gratification era! People don't want to watch videos that are four minutes long. They want 30 secs or less and they want a link to click on should they want to buy what you're selling. Also-- are you putting your logo within the first two seconds of your video or reel? Or is it at the end? Always put your logo or special etc. within the first two seconds of your video and if you can, make it part of the video entirely. You can't expect for people to watch the video all the way to the end-- most don't. One second they're watching your reel and the next they've moved on to a video of people falling off motorcycles. Short and sweet is the key!

**Bonus Tip**

While you should never get so hung up on your niche that you don't try new content strategies, it is important to know what content is appropriate for your business. Content for a clothing boutique or restaurant is going to be vastly different than content for a law firm or bank.

Thanks for reading and I hope this gave you a a few strategies to improve your social media following!
